PROJECT 1: Elements & Principles of Design
For the first project you will shoot a roll of 400 ASA color film and have it developed on your own (Walgreen’s, Target, etc.). This will be an exercise to demonstrate that you know how to operate your camera to get proper exposures.
For manual camera users you must know how to set the shutter speed and aperture, and read your light meter before shooting.
This project also requires you to consciously make decisions about composition and framing. For each of your shots, create a composition that emphasizes a specific element of design. Work from the 4 major Elements of Design listed below.
Divide your roll evenly between LINE, SHAPE, TEXTURE and VALUE.
You must shoot each of your subjects at least twice, but you must change the Point of View or the Framing of your subjects for each shot.
ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
1. LINE -Straight = horizontal / vertical / diagonal
-Curved
-Intersecting
-Converging
2. SHAPE -Geometric
-Organic
-Incomplete
Can be 2D or 3D
Overlapping shapes create a feeling of depth
3. TEXTURE Visual, surface appears rough or smooth
4. VALUE = represents lightness or darkness of an element;
High Contrast = very light & very dark next to each other
Large areas of High Contrast can create positive and negative space
Remember:
METER AND FOCUS EVERY TIME Before YOU SHOOT!
You must keep your SHOT LOG in your Journal, until you have demonstrated a working knowledge of exposure, and can successfully shoot an entire roll of film with proper exposures.
